Okay, first let me be clear. I in no way wanted to go and see this movie. Why
did I go? Well that is what you have to do when you have a 10 year old brother
and the parents don't want to take him to see it. Anyway, twenty minutes into
the movie I started to think that the movie was okay for younger children,
because it was quite a silly plot line (the main aim in the plot is that they
want to shirink the moon) and was maybe lacking in some emotion. However, I have
to admit by the end of the movie I quite enjoyed it, you really get to see Gru
(our villian turned dad),on his journey and see the changing emotions he has to
go through, not to mention the decisions he has to make. Some of the scenes our
quite touching and some of the dialogue is quite humerous.
Now I just want to
mention the cast, there is a very good cast including the very funny Steve
Carell, Jason Segal, Julie Andrews, Russell Brand leading the cast but of course
I have to give credit to the actresses who played the three girls Miranda
Cosgrove who was excellent playing the smart older sister, Dana Gaier as the
moody teenager and finally there is Elsie Fisher who at about 8 years old is a
natural.
So overall I think that this is a great family movie, the kids will
enjoy it more but I enjoyed it and I am a 16 year old girl, however i think that
it isnt a movie I would watch over and over again but I think children
would.
It is definatley worth a watch.

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey Season 3 DVD (Original U.K. Version) (2012)
The Great War is over and a long-awaited engagement is on, but all is not
tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and
personal crises grip the majestic English country estate for a third thrilling
season. As other great houses are crippled psychologically and financially in
the wake of World War I, Robert, Earl of Grantham, sticks to his duty to
maintain Downton more firmly than ever. But in this changing landscape nothing
is assured, and could it be that even the war-weary Crawleys must fight a new
battle to safeguard their beloved Downton?
The returning cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Penelope Wilton, Joanne Froggatt, Brendan Coyle and a host of others, joined by Shirley MacLaine, who plays Martha Levinson, the very American mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham. Written and created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey, Season 3 is a Carnival Films and Masterpiece co-production, in association with NBCUniversal.
Includes the Downton Abbey Season 3 Finale, "A Journey to the Highlands."

The much anticipated Downton Abbey Series 3 starts in Spring 1920, carrying on from the superb Christmas Special which was set over the 1919/20 holiday period. The first episode picks up with Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley at last about to get hitched, but as usual there is quite a lot going on at Downton both above and below stairs and you just know that nothing is going to go smoothly.
Shirley Maclaine makes her appearance as Martha Levinson, Lady Grantham's American mother. As usual, Violet, played by Maggie Smith manages to set the scene with some rather pithy comments. Martha has no time for the stuffy English and their traditions and is not slow to voice her opinion. Clearly she was introduced as a foil to Maggie Smith and the interplay between the two does work very well as one suspected it would. Violet seems to manage to continue to dominate any scene she is in.
There are plenty of dramatic moments in the new series, as life on the Downton estate returns to more as it was shown in the first series, before the First World War when it served as a convalescent home for injured servicemen. However, there are new challenges for Downton in the post war period. The interaction between the family and those that serve them `below stairs' continues to be a rich source of story lines for the script writers and is a major contribution to the success of the show.
Downton Abbey is the most successful costume drama from British TV since Brideshead Revisited some thirty years ago - and this is quite an accolade as they produce a lot of this sort of drama in the UK. Regular viewers of Downton will have been holding their breath wondering whether Series 3 could possibly keep up the very high standards of the previous episodes. However, we need not have worried and few will be disappointed with the latest series. You really wonder how far Downton can go - personally I would not be surprised if it runs up to the 1930s in due course so hopefully plenty to look forward to! The really good news is that we know there will be a two hour Christmas Special in 2012 and although a fourth series has not yet been announced it will be very surprising if it does not follow.
Although the UK issue of this DVD does not include the Christmas 2012 Special, it is very likely that the US one will - certainly the North American Series 2 DVD did include the 2011 Christmas Special. US buyers would therefore be advised not to order the separate Christmas 2012 DVD until this point is clarified as they may well find it is included with Series 3. The UK DVD also includes 68 minutes of extra features which one would expect that the US DVD will also include. The special features are Downton Abbey in 1920, The Men of Downton Abbey, Two Weddings, an Interview with Shirley Maclaine and Behind the Scenes - The Cricket Match.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
A good portion of Trekkies (or Trekkers, depending on one's level of Star
Trek obsession) have special affection for episodes of the original TV
series that related to Earth and other-Earth cultures visited by the crew of the
Enterprise, version 1.0. Some of the shows unfolded in distorted forms of
the past, some in the present day of Star Trek's future reality. Director
J.J. Abrams recognized the importance of this relationship in his origin-story
reboot of the franchise in 2009, and in Star Trek Into Darkness he has
made it an even greater touchstone to the roots of Star Trek creator Gene
Roddenberry's defining philosophy from nearly 50 years ago. The human home world
is key to the plot of this spectacularly bold leap into Star Trek lore,
which cleverly continues along the alternate path that was established as
separate from the "original" Star Trek universe in Abrams's first
whiz-bang crack at advancing the mythology. But it's not just Earth that is cool
and imperiled in this rendering of adventure in the 23rd century; Into
Darkness also plays with the original conceit that Earthlings were member to
a multi-species United Federation of Planets ruled by a "Prime Directive" of
noninterference with other civilizations. The conflict comes when rogue elements
in the Earth-based Starfleet Command hunger to shift focus from peaceful
exploration to militarization, a concept that is anathema to the crew of the
Enterprise and her ongoing mission. The new cast is again inventively
reunited, each of them further investing their characters with traits that
reveal novel acting choices while staying true to the caricatures that are
ingrained in our popular culture. The interplay between Chris Pine as Kirk and
Zachary Quinto as Spock is deeper, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura is a solid third in
their relationship. John Cho (Sulu), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Anton Yelchin
(Chekov), and Karl Urban (McCoy) all have standout roles in the overall ensemble
mystique as well as the plot-heavy machinations of this incarnation's narrative.
Fortunately, the burdens of the story are well served by some important
additions to the cast. Benedict Cumberbatch's Shakespearean aura, ferociously
imperious gaze, and graceful athleticism make him a formidable villain as the
mysterious Starfleet operative John Harrison. Harrison has initiated a campaign
of terror on Earth before leading the Enterprise to even greater dangers
in the enemy territory of Klingon-controlled space. That his background may make
dedicated Trekkies/Trekkers gasp is just one acknowledgment of the substantial
and ingrained legacy Star Trek has borne. There are many references, nods
and winks to those with deep reverence for the folklore (some of them perhaps a
little too close to being inside-baseball), though the fantastical and
continually exciting story stands as an expertly crafted tale for complete
neophytes. Another new face is Peter Weller--iconically famous in sci-fi-dom as
RoboCop--here playing a steely, authoritative Starfleet bigwig who may
also be following a hidden agenda. Not only is he running a covert operation,
he's also at the helm of a fearsome secret starship that looms over the
Enterprise like a shark poised to devour its prey. Which brings us to the
awesome CGI effects driving the dazzling visual style of Into Darkness
and the endlessly fascinating cosmos it makes real. The wow factor extends from
the opening set piece on an alien world of primitive humanoids, garish
vegetation, and a roiling volcano to the finale of destruction in a future San
Francisco that is elegantly outfitted with gleaming-spired skyscrapers and all
manner of flying vehicles. (London also gets a breathtaking 23rd-century
makeover). With a coolness that glistens in every immaculately composed shot,
the movie never forgets that humanism and creativity make the myriad design
details and hyper-technology pop out as much more than eye candy. The biggest
achievement of Star Trek Into Darkness is that it hews to the highest
standard of a highly celebrated tradition. Though Kirk and co. may bend it a
little, the Prime Directive remains unbroken. --Ted Fry

OK folks first of all, this is a movie. J.J. is not trying to re-invent the wheel here. What J.J. Abrams has accomplished here is to re-imagine a burned out brand and series (that I loved as much as any true fan) and had the guts to go where no director has gone before with it. He shows his total respect for the best of the previously done films, his respect for the fans of the original films, and bravely creates a marvelous environment for the future of this series. I cannot tell you the last time I have sit in a darkened movie theater (full of fans and first timers) and had so much fun listening to the audience ooh and aah at what they were seeing and hearing from the screen. I along with them laughed, oohed, aah-ed, and even shed a tear, as this movie unfolded, and cannot remember the last time I felt so satisfied in seeing a film.
To all of the families with teens and tweens out there, Yes! this is the whole family movie experience you've been waiting for (and to be fair, there are some really intense scenes, and a four letter word uttered, but you just know the character would really say it in the heat of the moment) !!! It Is Fun! The cast is pitch perfect, the look, sound, and feel of "Into Darkness" is a joy to behold, and a loving homage to all of us who loved the original characters and films, and to those of us who just love good old fashion science fiction. It is a first class roller coaster ride and a true challenge to film makers to up the ante for audiences, if you want us to continue to shell out the movie bucks. By the way, this is a repeater for me as I will go back to see it again.
To J.J. Abrams and your entire crew, Thank You! for being so fearless, so brave to tweak and tamper with a sci-fi original, and re-remind me why I like to go to the movies. I think that Gene Roddenberry would be so proud of your take on his universe.
To the entire cast, Thank You! for being true to the original actors and characters, for giving them your spin, and making the roles your own. I have not had this much fun in a movie theater in a long, long, time, and in a galaxy far, far, away. BRAVO !!!
And to those of you that are leaving such horrid and negative comments to my review, WAKE UP!! These are MOVIES that we are talking about. I now understand why some actors comment at some point in their careers, about some fans needing to get a life. Movies are not real life changing events. They are meant for ALL of us to ENJOY (or not)for the two or three hours we sit in that theater, and maybe learn a little something (or not). Movies allow us to escape our sometimes droll and stressful lives for just a moment, to fantasize, to dream for a moment, to forget how different our lives have become. If you don't like or feel the same way about a movie as I do, I understand. But understand this, I don't try to keep people from seeing, renting, or buying a film because I don't like it, nor do I spend my time trying to drag someone else down because their opinion is different from mine.
I saw this film and I had Fun!! It took me back to the early days of Bart Sloane (The 4D Man - The Blob), Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts), and Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey) when special effects were in their infancy. I felt the same way when I saw my first Steven Spielberg film (Jaws), my first Ridley Scott movie (Alien), George Lucas (Star Wars), and now J.J. Abrams. These are but a minute few of the hundreds of great filmmakers (I could go on forever)that have gone the extra mile to entertain us, to give us a break from the real world that is so full of Intolerance, Hate, Fear, Hunger, Struggle, and Disease. Give them a break guy's, they are just making movies for us to enjoy (or not).
Remember, the world will still turn tomorrow, that is unless God decides that he has had enough of us, and the way we treat each other, and decides to just shakes us off of this little blue planet that we do not respect at all.

When the critically-acclaimed "Batman - the Animated
Series" premiered on Fox in the early 90's, it was obvious that the same
production team would take a stab at DC fellow stablemate, Superman. "Superman -
the Animated Series" ran on the WB from 1996-2000 and had the same top quality
writing, animation, and use of top name acting talent as had its
predecessor.
The series is especially notable for assembling some of the best "voices" for any animated series. Dana Delaney is great as Lois Lane while David Kaufman perfectly assays the role of Jimmy Olsen. Just like Kevin Conroy is the definite Batman/Bruce Wayne, appearing in five episodes of the show, Clancy Brown is perfection as Superman's nemesis, Lex Luthor.
The last, but certainly not least of the main characters, is Superman/Clark Kent, voiced by Tim Daly. The former "Wings" star does a good job of bringing "Ole Blue" to life. However, it is the actor's turn as Bizarro in three installments that is a treat for the ears. It's hard to imagine that Daly voices both Superman and his not-too-bright Doppelganger. That is a testament to Daly's skills as an actor.
In addition to the main characters, recurring and guest villains are also brilliantly portrayed by the likes of Mike Farrell and real-life wife Shelley Fabares (Pa and Ma Kent), Malcolm McDowell (Metallo in 4 instalments), Brad Garrett (Bibbo and Lobo),Corey Burton (Braniac), Gilbert Gottfried (Mr. Mxyzptlk), Michael Dorn (Kalibak and John Steel), Ed Asner as the deliciously wicked Granny Goodness, and Michael Ironside as the despot Darkseid, just to cite a few.
Speaking of the latter two, Asner and Ironside appear as their respective characters in the best episodes of the series, which include "Little Girl Lost,Parts I and II," "Apokolips, Parts I and II," and "Legacy, Parts I and II." These installments not only are inspired by legendary Jack Kirby's Fourth World series but demonstrate a more intense look at the Man of Steel as he faces what is arguably his greatest foe in the form of Darkseid.
"Apokolips, Part II" also features one of the most surprising deaths of ANY television series, bar none.
In addition to the series 54 episodes, this compilation has some really good audio commentary on several episodes, interesting looks at the myth of Superman, and a short piece on Darkseid.
While some may decry the fact that there are some double-sided discs in the set, the bargain price makes up for the packaging issue.

The Blu-ray version of Season 1 boasts significant video quality improvements over the 2000 DVD release.
Season 1 used a grainier film stock than subsequent seasons. This was problematic for the 2000 DVD release because MPEG II encoding has a difficult time handling grain, HBO squeezed 4 episodes onto each discs (except the last one) resulting in a high level of compression, there was a lot of edge enhancement applied to the video, and that this was a relatively early DVD release -- MPEG II encoding has significantly improved since then. As a result, the video on the DVDs had a lot of artifacts -- and the larger the TV you have, the more obtrusive the artifacts and edge enhancement are.
The Blu-ray release pretty much fixes all of those problems. You can really see the difference in the closeups on the actors' faces. The image is clear with a film texture. You'll also notice a lot more details in the background.
The pilot episode doesn't look as good as the rest of the season. This is no doubt because a cheaper film stock was used and they had less time to light scenes due to it being a pilot. The rest of the episodes look uniformly excellent.
Don't expect the show to look quite as good as good as the HD broadcasts of the later seasons. Starting in Season 2 much more money and effort was put into the cinematography in order to give the show a feature film look. The interiors of Season 1 are typically slightly over lit with a soft white light. I suspect this was done because they had a shorter production schedule then later Seasons when the show was a hit, and they didn't have time to relight sets every time they moved the camera.
The packaging is virtually identical to the DVD box. HBO has wisely decided to spread the season across 5 discs -- no more than 3 episodes per disc. This minimizes compression and helps improve video quality.
Nothing to report about the sound. Like the DVDs, the surround sound channels only come to life during explosions and shoot outs.
Fans of the show will be very happy with the results.

I had never purchased a Jillian Michaels DVD before b/c of the hit or miss reviews. So when I heard raves about this one, I decided to give it a shot and I am so glad I did. This is an absolute butt-kicker workout. I am an intermediate/advanced exerciser (I work out 5-6 days a week) so I figured I could see what Level 1 was all about and move onto Level 2 right away. Listen to me folks--these workouts are HARD. Level 2 was VERY difficult--a good difficult though, very challenging. When Jillian tells you to start at level 1, listen to her she knows what she's doing. I've been at this for about 5 days, and I already feel a difference in my body.
Jillian is tough--absolutely NO rest in this workout (not even for a sip of water) but that's what makes it go by so quickly, and it makes your body change, according to Jillian. You're done before you know it--but by the end you've gotten a kick butt workout and feel like you've really done something. She bases her workout on the 3-2-1 method: 3 mins strength, 2 mins cardio, 1 min abs. Her strength circuits remind me of Jari Love--compound exercises that work the upper and lower body simultaneously. The cardio is good as well: a lot of jumping, so watch those knees (she has a modifier for beginner and lower impact) And the abs is straight up ab work--a variety of crunches and twists on the floor.
This is a great workout and I find Jillian to be tough but she's pretty likeable. Be warned though: she's no-nonsense. I think it's funny when during the stretch she admits she's not flexible and struggles to reach her legs on the floor. I thought "Ha, Ha, finally something I'm better at than Jillian!" lol
If you really want to get a good workout and to jumpstart your weight loss get this DVD you will not be disappointed. It's great for those who are short on time too and want to try something new; every workout is just under 30 mins!

Pros: I hate doing aerobics and I'm not into health clubs, but when it's cold outside, I have to compromise, so when I saw this DVD on an infomercial, I gave it a shot. I love to dance and I love hip hop. From another site, I checked out how the actual dance aerobics were and enjoyed that enough to buy this (it's a little too expensive though).
Fat Burning Cardio: Shaun T doesn't go so fast that you can't keep up, but just enough to keep you energized. Plus, the man is extra funny, especially when "Don't Cha" by the Pussycat Dolls comes on. There are those who can count steps and there are those who can really dance, and from his body movement, I'm convinced he can really work the floor. This is by far the most fun I've ever had when doing aerobics and I plan to go through the whole 4-week plan, especially since Chicago weather is crazy anyway so I know I can't jog everyday like I want to. Didn't know he was an Alpha Phi Alpha until I looked at one of his sites, so that explains the frat hop dance he does, and that is my favorite part of the "Fat Burner" DVD.
Ab Sculpting: The abs are the most difficult part to gain muscle in but his workouts automatically make me feel the burn (yes, I know, very cliche to say). But surprisingly, it's my legs that are getting the most workout just from the dancing involved.
Total Body Burn: That workout was hard. I'm sure it'll get easier with time, but for the most part, I wanted it be over. On the other hand, I loved the music the most on this one, especially Lumidee, as well as the dances that resembled tribal techniques. The second time around, however, this workout wasn't so bad. Still worked up a sweat (and I'm not a sweater so that was surprising) but not as surprisingly hard as the first time around.
Secrets to Flat Abs: Since I'd done the work-outs already, this stuff was kind of like studying for a test after you've already taken it and the scantrons are collected. But if I'd done this first, it would've been useful.
Five Minute Workout: Speaking of exercises that'll kill you, that one had me so worn out that I sat on my floor for about ten minutes and didn't even realize I'd fallen asleep. It's such a quick but fierce workout. You feel like you worked out that 22-25 minutes from the intensity of it.
Teach You How to Dance: I got a little lost with that one because he was getting excited with his choreography and some of the moves were a little old school and slightly drag queen, but it will be enjoyable for people who don't really know how to dance.
Cons: Although he does hip hop dance, I have yet to hear a real hip hop song. This is more like dance/pop music, but it's all good since I like a lot of that too and the language won't get BeachBody in trouble.

Last year HBO released the complete series of this ground-breaking show with the very high pricetag we've come to expect from any HBO original series on DVD. According to the press release, a year later, HBO wants to make this collection more available to consumers with new compact packaging and a lower price point. I continue from the press release:
The new package is still book style, but of a vastly different sort - it opens up from a split down the center in a gatefold fashion, and discs slide in from the side. Speaking of discs, HBO informs us that all of the DVDs from the previous Complete Series set will be included, with all the bonus material found on them. However, the extra soundtrack CD discs will not be packed in with the revised collection. Still, the new list price is a hundred dollars lower, which certainly good news for any fans who perhaps couldn't afford last year's model.
End of press release. The bottom line on this is we are paying one hundred dollars less to give up 2 music CDs and in exchange get packaging that should not enable so many scratched discs. The extra features include an interview with series creator David Chase conducted by Alec Baldwin and two "Supper With the Sopranos" featurettes that will show cast members sitting down for dinner to discuss their favorite episodes.
As for the series itself, if the Godfather saga was the view of the mafia from the executive suite, this series is a complex tale of the mafia from the working man's point of view. If you've never watched this show, you're in for an extended treat. Yes, there is violence and nudity, but it is never gratuitous and is needed to contrast Tony Soprano, the thinking man's gangster, with the reality of the life he has been born to and, quite frankly, would not ever have left even knowing how so many of his associates have ended up. Tony Soprano can discuss Sun Tzu with his therapist, then beat a man to death with a frying pan in a fit of rage, and while dismembering and disposing of the body with his nephew, take a break, sit down and watch TV while eating peanut butter out of the jar, and give that nephew advice on his upcoming marriage like they had just finished a Sunday afternoon of viewing NFL football. Even Carmella, his wife, when given a chance for a way out, finds that she really prefers life with Tony and the perks that go with it and looking the other way at his indiscretions versus life on her own. If you followed the whole thing, you know how it ends. If you didn't, trust me you've never seen a TV show end like this.

I'm a 31 year old avid reader. I loved Harry Potter, Twilight, Mortal Instruments, and Hunger Games all which became movies. Movies never live up to the novels, yet usually I still enjoy seeing how the books are adapted even if the acting is poor or some of my favorite parts have to be cut. Seeing the rating of this movie almost kept me from renting it, but then I read the reviews. Almost all of the bad reviews were people who were disappointed it didn't keep with the original story line. Well I never read the book, so I didn't know what I was missing. I was captivated beginning to end. Yes, I did notice a bad southern accent at the beginning, which I probably wouldn't have noticed if another review hadn't pointed that out. And yes there is a scene where she pours tea and obviously nothing comes out of the pot and the cup is empty. But I only noticed those things because I was looking for them based on other reviews. Within 10 minutes I had forgotten the reviews and didn't notice any other "little" thing, because the story was captivating and fun. A great coming of age story. Just like Harry Potter has to chose to use his magic for good or evil or like Edward Cullen's has to struggle against his vampire instincts, the main character struggles between good and evil and who she really is and what good and evil mean. It's a beautiful story full of love, and awesome fantasy. A must see for any fantasy freak such as myself!

When I first started watching the first season of Dr. Who starring Christopher Eccleston, I enjoyed it! It was fun and exciting and ingenious. However, the latest season is too dark and gloomy for my liking.
The Bells of St. John - Dr. Who displays 'righteous anger' many times whereas the villan seems to be more cool and composed! What happened to the fun loving Doctor?
The Rings of Akhaten - Again, the segment where the Doctor confronts the 'solar parasite' is too emotionally charged with anger. I felt it was more like watching Shakespeare than Dr. Who.
Cold War - Ok, not so much anger in this episode, but it was quite tedious to watch the Doctor trying to talk the Ice Warrior out of destroying earth. Not that I am looking for more action, but the whole dialogue was not convincing enough.
Hide - Perhaps one of the better episodes in this series. The fun-loving Doctor is back, and he travels to meet his 'idol' Emma Grayling. He then uses his TARDIS to help a stranded time traveller. That's the Doctor I used to love!
The Crimson Horror - Even the Doctor needs help sometimes! I think this episode demonstrates this beautifully.
Nightmare in Silver - Predictable storyline that you can see it coming from a mile away (when the Doctor suggested a chess match the intention was so obvious any fan would have picked it up). I felt the ending was a bit rushed.
The Name of the Doctor - How many girls need to disrupt the history of time in order to save the Doctor? Didn't Rose do that once by painting "Bad Wolf" all over time? The ending was both more depressing than it needs to be.

I'm reviewing the show not the blu-ray since, at the time of this writing, there's no release date yet.
I've watched every episode of this series multiple times. I own the first two seasons on blu-ray and usually keep newer episodes saved on my DVR until space gets low. This show ranks right up there with the likes of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia", "Community", and "The Office". Not that this show is necessarily the SAME as those series. I mean as far as how much it makes me literally laugh out loud. Obnoxiously out loud...with no apology for doing so!
Some people may consider the humor as being low brow and juvenile. That may be true, but the writing is smart, quick witted and just plain hilarious. The cast is perfect from the main characters to the supporting ones. Montez may well be my favorite "secondary" character on television. It might be easy to suggest that one must be on something to get this. Not true. I like getting weird with these guys no matter what I have or haven't indulged in.
If you've never seen this show do yourself and your funny bone a favor. Buy the first two seasons and enjoy. "Highly" recommended. (:

I was really excited to get this blu-ray along with the blu-ray of the first season and while I'm happy to get both seasons in blu-ray quality, the extras are sorely disappointing.
One plus about purchasing a DVD or blu-ray is getting to view extras and for a show like Adventure Time, I was really looking forward to getting more insight into the show from the creators themselves. There were only two extras available: Some interviews with the staff and commentary tracks.
The interviews are basically a waste of time. Pen briefly interviews some of his staff and has them watch a funny/bizarre video on a computer screen. Unfortunately, we cannot see what they are actually watching, just the expressions of each person as they watch the seemingly hilarious video. This is such a huge tease. Why did they even put this on here?
As for the commentaries, I was at first happy to see that they had commentary tracks for every episode, but after going through a few episodes, I am just left frustrated. It seems like every now and then a part is cut out and replaced with ukulele music because people either ramble on or what was said was too "juicy" for a children's television show. My heart was broken to hear a lead in into some sort of interesting tidbit behind a character or scene only to hear it abruptly cut into ukulele music and cut back out to uproarious laughter. I sort of understand this, but is it really so salacious that it couldn't be included or perhaps couldn't they have put some sort of warning for parents? What's great about this show is that it tiptoes around what appears to be adult content in a way that appeals to all ages and this seems like a slap in the face to its adult fans. In any case, since when do children actually listen to commentary?!
Outside of this, the actual content, the episodes themselves, are still great and I'm happy to have this blu-ray. That's why I gave it three stars. However, I do have the feeling that I have somehow been cheated as a fan of this show. I hope that they correct this in future releases. I would rather have no extras then to be teased like this.

The Call (2013)
In this heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thriller, veteran 911 operator Jordan
(Halle Berry) takes a life-altering call from a teenage girl (Abigail Breslin)
who has been kidnapped and thrown into the trunk of a madman's car. But with the
clock ticking, Jordan soon realizes she must confront a killer from her past in
order to save the girl's life and put an end to a serial killer's haunting
rampage.

Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin were really good in my opinion. These roles fit them well. This movie was full of suspense and tension. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The people who are giving the bad reviews are way to critical over this film that was just meant to be a good thrill ride. I'm pretty sure the director didn't intend for this to become an oscar nominee so don't critique it like it is Argo or something. It doesn't deserve the criticism. I was thoroughly scared which was a pleasant surprise. The bad guy was awesome and creepy as hell. Everything about this movie was pretty good EXCEPT the ending. SPOILER: I really don't think they needed to end it with abigail and Halle getting revenge on the bad guy. I and many others probably would have loved the ending they led up to which was them going to a movie together that weekend like Halle promised her in the trunk of the car. I wanted to feel good at the end of the movie, not worse. HOPEFULLY they release an alternate ending of sorts. I would love to see it. I would buy the blu-ray just to watch the movie with the alternate ending.

David Mitchell is one of my absolute favorite writers, and Cloud Atlas is among my favorite novels. It was my top pick for 2004. I've previously blogged about my unusual first encounter with Mr. Mitchell while he was touring for Cloud Atlas. (Google "David Mitchell returns to San Francisco" if you're curious.) Good times!
Anyway, considering my love of the novel, you can imagine that I've been looking forward to the film with equal measures of anticipation and trepidation. You always want the film to do the source material justice, but it's rare that it actually happens. Especially when you're looking at a novel as complex as Cloud Atlas. It was said by many to be unfilmable, and if asked, I would have agreed.
And I would have been so very wrong. What Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski, and Tom Tykwer have achieved is nothing short of astounding. I'll cut to the chase and tell you that I LOVED this film. It will surely be my favorite of the year.
Have you read Cloud Atlas? The novel has a very unusual structure. Mitchell's an experimental writer. The novel is composed of six linked stories taking place in six different time periods and comprised of six different literary genres. Yeah, that's not too ambitious. The novel opens with the most distant story in the past, a 19th century adventure at sea. Halfway through, the story ends abruptly, mid-sentence. Next, we're at the home of a once-eminent European composer in the early 20th century. That, too, ends abruptly, and now we're embroiled in a mystery in early 1970's San Francisco. But halfway through the tale just stops and we're on to a high comedy set near the present day. After reading half of Timothy Cavendish's ghastly ordeal, we're suddenly in the science fiction world of a futuristic and dystopian Seoul--for half a story. And finally, we're in far-distant, post-apocalyptic Hawaii, in a tale written entirely in pigeon English. And at last, the story goes all the way through to the end, after which the second half of the Seoul story commences, followed by all the others in reverse order.
The film is... totally not like that. It's structured completely differently, with quick scenes from all six stories rapidly juxtaposed against each other. There is constant shifting. It's an amazing way to tell the tale(s), but it works. It more than works. It really drives home the novel's abstract themes of connectedness. After the film, one of the things my friends and I commented upon was the staggering job of editing this film. I can't imagine what went into it, but it was masterful.
What these three writer/directors--apparently with limited input from Mr. Mitchell--did with this screenplay is extraordinary. It is brilliant. Now, it's been eight years since I read the novel, so my memory of the details is not so fresh, but by my reckoning, the screenplay was remarkably true to Mitchell. I recognized dialogue taken verbatim from the novel. Yes, there were elisions, but they were minor. The composer's daughter was removed entirely. She's a character that stands out in my mind due to a memorable later cameo in Mitchell's Black Swan Green, but you know what? She was superfluous. The film didn't need her. I'm sure there were other minor changes, but nothing at all that made me cry foul. No, as I watched the film, memories of the novel came flooding back in the most wonderful way. These filmmakers did a magnificent job of realizing the world(s) that David Mitchell had created.
The film boasts an impressive a-list cast that includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, and so many others. And you've never seen these actors like this. No one has. Go to IMDB and read the cast credits. They're all double, triple, quadruple, quintuple, and sextuple cast! You can't possibly catch or recognize all of their iterations. The actors change age, race, nationality, and gender across the roles. The makeup work is extraordinary, and if the film doesn't win the Oscar, there is simply no justice. Trying to spot Hugh Grant (mostly in smaller supporting roles) buried under old man or cannibal makeup is all kinds of fun, but this is far more than Hollywood stunt casting. The casting reflects the novel's themes. It gets the message across at times almost subliminally. It also gives these stars the opportunity to really flex their acting muscles. Tom Hanks brings down the house in a brief comic turn as a thuggish author. When have we seen this actor play so many different colors in a single film? It reminds viewers of just how good he is. Oh yeah, that's what those Oscars were for. The same can be said of much of the cast. I strongly encourage you to stay for the credits--at least long enough to see the photos of the actors in their many roles flash by. You will be shocked by what you missed. THAT was Halle Berry? you'll find yourself thinking.
Oh, and look for author Mitchell in a cameo as a "Union Spy." I didn't catch him, but I'll be on the lookout next time. Because I plan to see this film many, many times. There's just too much to take in. I'd venture I'll catch something new every time I see this film in years to come. Even at the lengthy running time of 2:44, I was ready to walk right back into the theater and start over from the beginning. The film held me transfixed, and I can't wait to see it again. Not to mention, I've already got a wish list in my mind of DVD extras!
I don't generally write movie reviews, but Cloud Atlas has inspired me. The ideas, the themes, the imagery of David Mitchell's wonderful and ground-breaking novel have sprung to life. It is magical. I attended an advance screening with several members of my book group the other night, and there was equal enthusiasm from those who had read the novel, and those who hadn't. Among my group, there were six thumbs way up, and one lonely dissenter--but she can write her own review. Mine is an unqualified rave. Go. See. This. Film.

This set came exactly as was expected. Five movies, all in cases the same as you would purchase individually at retail. Only two criteria held these back from a five star rating. Firstly, the short film that took place in between Fast and the Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious from the DVD Franchise Edition of the first two movies is, for no logical reason, excluded from the 2 Fast 2 Furious Blu-Ray unless I have completely missed something, along with the entire content of the bonus disk, though I understand that was exclusive to that collection. Not a huge deal since I know the entire storyline as I've been a fan since I was thirteen years old, but for my girlfriend who has JUST started watching the series I feel she missed out a little having me explain how Brian made it to Florida and where the Skyline came from instead of watching the short film as an introduction. My only other complaint was that the package came with all five movies taped together with packaging tape. For those who simply discard the cardboard sleeves surrounding the movie cases, no big deal. For me, annoying that the edges of my sleeves are peeled off. Great product, I got it for a steal as a deal of the day. Buy this if you're a FATF fan as there will be at least a seventh movie, so no comprehensive "the series is over, here's everything" collection will not appear for likely several more years.
The Glades Season 3 (2012)
Palm Glades, Florida is hotter than ever in the simmering Season Three of The
Glades! With an intriguing caseload packed with alien abductions, steamy love
triangles, nudist colonies, blackmail, and murder, dashing homicide detective
Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore) definitely has his work cut out for him. When he's
not cracking his cases or hitting the links, Jim's personal relationship with
Callie intensifies, but beautiful FDLE bureau chief Jennifer Starke is keeping
her eyes on him. Filled with compelling drama, dark mystery and wry humor,
Season Three of The Glades is simply as hot as it gets!

With Callie now in Atlanta, the whole Jim/Callie dynamic is borderline annoying. The cases are still interesting, as is Jim's repartee with Carlos and Daniel. One reality check is in nearly every episode Jim verbally accuses 2-3 innoncent parties of being guilty where in the "real world" it would be construed as harassment.
Welcome Taylor Cole (Jennifer) who joins the show as a Supervisor sent in to evaluate Jim's success rate while coming up with solutions to make his cases more trial-able. Jennifer is a raven haired beauty that is smoldering hot and has a knack for wearing heels and short skirts even in the most inappropriate of places. Since IMHO, the show itself is not any better than the previous season, I have to believe that the additional +-100k viewers per episodes are all her!
Maybe it is an optical illusion, though I swear that Callie was filmed this year at odd angles, which is generally a sign of pregnancy or weight gain? Then again, will all due respect to Kiele Sanchez (AKA Callie), there are solid reasons why you rarely see her in the same frame as Taylor Cole!
Without giving away the ending and under the guise of full disclosure, I may have removed 1/2 star from my rating for the simple reason that Jim took a pass on an impassioned plea by Taylor Cole when she essentially offered herself up!
In sum, an entertaining show that may have lost a step in season 3, I can only hope that Ms. Cole reappears in Season 4 or I don't know if I will be compelled to tune in.

Which means you already know what I think of this simply amazing, too good for TV scripted show that NOBODY is watching, hence I get, I think 11 more episodes until my heart is once again broken as I salute the end of another absolutely outstanding television show. I am with both reviewers of TV Guide and USAToday who have tirelessly and shamelessly promoted this show (who both often will try to push a Friday night show opposite it, ie: "you can watch so and so for some slightly decent entertainment, or you can crawl out of your it's the end of the week and I'm tired and don't want my brain to work too hard malaise and watch Fringe for truly intelligent, well-acted, excellent entertainment" (sic). I do have to say that putting Grimm up against Fringe is simply Hollywood being rude again as if there is a real choice. I mean, Fringe has been on a lot longer, but has continued to get better and better for the three of us watching it. Grimm is pretty much on a par with Fringe, in creativity and intelligence and lovely quirky characters (seriously, Walter or Monroe? As if we have a choice!), but I think I'm just being bitter again.
Admittedly, Fringe had a bit of a stuttering beginning, but I don't believe I've ever seen a sci fi show that didn't (I'll reference Eureka here, which in my opinion had about the worst first year of any sci fi show I've seen - fast forward to its final show that I used up a box of Kleenex as my heart broke watching what became, to me, as close to the perfection of Firefly we have gotten on the entertainment medium called scripted television). Fringe, for those of you who abandoned it for whatever reasons, thus making me soon face another evening wrapped in my favorite blankie, box of Kleenex on hand as I once again, pay homage to the finale of sci fi perfection, will forever be burned into my memory with its wonderful cast of characters - Olivia, Peter, Astrid, and the ultimate arguably best character since Capt. Malcolm Reynolds of Firefly, Walter, presumably *SPOILER ALERT* defeat the Observers as they seek to strip earth of whatever they need and move on to do the same to another hapless planet. And honestly? How did they find the perfect actress to play Etta - who is the spitting image of Olivia with Peter's eyes?
While I am grateful that we get with Fringe what we have not gotten from countless other wonderful show (she says, bitterly, still wondering just what The Event was even after two or three years). So I should be grateful to Fox who has been far more generous overall than other networks *cough* NBC *cough* for giving us closure (ie:Prison Break). But really, I couldn't say it better than either the TV Guide guy OR the USAToday guy who have shamelessly and bravely stood up for this truly brilliant show (although without ant compensation) - THIS is not Fox's fault. It is our's. After all Fox is a business and has continued to allow the same 3.5 million viewers (paltry in network world) the privilege of this intelligent, exceptional scripted show far longer than the numbers game should have allowed. We all make choices with what little time we have these days - especially in the only demographic that counts which boggles my mind - those 18 - 49ers who are simply too busy raising families, working to pay the bills or attending whatever event or child-centered Friday night delight to watch an original brand new Steven Spielberg offering let alone a simple TV show. No matter that those of us OVER the age of 49 have made our money and probably have more discretionary income to spend on most advertisers wares - but I'm on my weighted soap box again. I think even Fox was hoping that the final season of Fringe would garner more than the usual 3.5 million voters as I read the comments when they announced them. I think even Fox would have liked another year of this wonderfully odd cast and the many stories left to tell about them. But alas, for whatever reasons, we, the People, have spoken and Fringe will soon be no more. Some day, people who could have made a difference now WILL find and watch Fringe and wish they'd watched it when it mattered. So do I. So do I!

So do I. So do I!

not only was peter removed from this show but also the two cops who worked with Megan, the lead character, a medical examiner. brought in as a major new character is a cop who Megan previously knew and with whom she was involved. They do have chemistry in the show and he is infinitely more appealing than anyone this show has used as a male to date. The two doofus, comic MEs are back as are the daughter, the boss and to a limited extent, the mother. the only thing that is somewhat unbelievable is that a medical examiner in a big city would be spending a ton of time with the cops other than at the scene of the crime to study the body and then with the cops during the autopsy, if they attended. But no, Megan is right out there with the cops solving the cases. this reminds me more of the partnership of Bones and Booth in BONES than of a forensic medical show. I do keep watching though because of Dana Delaney. She was the best thing on the end portion of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and has transposed that talent here. The scripts are good but they need to bring a consultant in who works for big city medical examiners' offices to get SOME reality into this show.

Django Unchained (2012)
Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Academy
Award ?-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his
former owners lands him face-to-face with a German-born bounty hunter Dr. King
Schultz (Academy Award?-winner Christolph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the
murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The
unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture
of the Brittles – dead or alive.
Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.
Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award?-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz rouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award?-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

As an avid fan of Quentin Tarantino, there's a level of quality that I expect from each film that he makes. I expect to connect with his characters, but not necessarily like any of them. I expect to see a film that satisfies the film geek in me. More than anything, I expect to see a film that entertains throughout the prerequisite bloated running time.
"Django Unchained" is nearly three hours long. But it never feels that long, it entertains and surprises every step along the way. When I first checked my watch, we were already two hours into the film. All of Tarantino's films are usually about this long. Tarantino has been having fun with fictionalizing historical periods lately. This started with 2009's "Inglourious Basterds", which was easily one of the best films of that year. My eighty-something year old grandmother, who lived through the time that the film depicted - World War II - said that if events actually happened as they did in that film, that we would be living in a better world today. I think that's a pretty high compliment, especially since my grandmother is not Tarantino's target audience. He was able to design a great story - not an idealistic view of that time period, but still a pretty fascinating one.
"Django" is about slavery...a taboo subject in any film, a strangely popular one, recently, as the same time period is explored in "Lincoln". It's about Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave who is bought and then freed by Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz, one-upping himself from the fantastic performance he gave in "Basterds"), a dentist turned bounty hunter. White supremacist slave owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) bought and enslaved his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), and Django and Schultz are out to correct the grave injustice done to both of them, and this doesn't mean just capturing and killing Candie, but many others who are responsible for the trauma experienced by Broomhilda.
Christoph Waltz has got to be one of the finest living actors in Hollywood. He's incredibly charismatic, but he cares about his character, first and foremost. As the prime antagonist in "Basterds", he was positively horrifying. In this film, he's the hero, but at the same time, he's anything but that. He brings humor and depth to a character that wouldn't have worked this well otherwise. Jamie Foxx does a good job as well, but I don't necessarily see him winning anything this Oscar season.
I'm half-tempted to call "Django" Quentin Tarantino's superhero movie. Django is by no means that, he's an oppressed figure with no real "super powers", however he's a kick-ass guy who the audience roots for from the very beginning. He even has his own theme song! We don't know how he appears to be more literate than other slaves, and he is somehow always able to outsmart those around him.
"Django" shows Tarantino having slightly more respect for genre than he ever has. It's a western revenge epic, first and foremost. It's also kind of a comedy, with some of the most clever dialogue I've heard in a film in 2012. It's also a romance, displaying the forbidden love between Django and his wife. But it's first and foremost a western, and Tarantino sticks to that.
This film isn't perfect, however. One thing I expect from Tarantino is well-developed strong female characters. We don't have that in "Django". I was hoping that Kerry Washington, who is also badass protagonist Olivia Pope in ABC's "Scandal", would be smart and strong-willed enough to get herself out of the problems which are out of her hands. I was hoping for Tarantino to give her some snappy dialogue, to show that her character is, like Django, superior to all of the other slaves around her. She isn't. She just kind of stands there and whimpers. She's helpless, and I wasn't expecting that from Tarantino, who has written some of the best female protagonists in film.
Other than this, "Django Unchained" is a masterful film. It takes alot for a nearly three hour long film to be engaging the entire way through, and it is. It's wickedly funny, and at the same time, extremely dramatic. With its graphic violence and filthy mouth, it isn't for the faint of heart. All of the actors here, especially DiCaprio, seem to be having tons of fun here, and it shows. Tarantino loves to fictionalize history, and if such films are as good as "Django Unchained", I think he should keep doing it. It's a vision of history that only Tarantino can bring us.
